Most US employment is at-will, but firing someone for illegal reasons — discrimination based on protected characteristics, retaliation for whistleblowing or filing complaints, or in breach of an employment contract — can support a wrongful termination claim.

How do I file a workplace discrimination complaint?

Most discrimination claims start with a charge filed with the EEOC or your state's fair employment agency, generally within 180 to 300 days of the discriminatory act. After the agency process you may receive a right-to-sue letter allowing a lawsuit.
